Raising a child with Autism has given me an extensive history in dealing with the California school system for children with disabilities. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. I have navigated the Individual Educational Program (IAP) process, speech therapist and school psychologists. I have fought to get my son qualified for services at Central Valley Regional Services and had the privilege to get him counseling services at the Sullivan Center for Children.
While autism is usually a life-long condition, all children and adults benefit from interventions, or therapies, that can reduce symptoms and increase skills and abilities. Although it is best to begin intervention as soon as possible, the benefits of therapy can continue throughout life. Assisting clients with referrals to counseling, speech therapy, school resources and Central Valley Regional Center is a chance for me to give back for all the assistance that I received for my son.
